Why Are There More Older Nudists and Naturists Than Younger Ones?

| October 28, 2012 | 0 Comments

In nudism today, why are most of the people older nudists?

Older Nudists – Why are most people that participate in nudist and naturist activities over 35 years old? Is it really just the natural progression of things? Can we get more younger nudists involved? Or will nudism forever be dominated by older nudists and naturists?

Younger Nudists – Despite whether you attend an organized nudist event or simply visit a nude beach, you are almost guaranteed to find that the vast majority of today’s nudists are over the age of 35. Sure, you will find some younger nudists out there as well, but the fact of the matter is that the central demographic of nudists is an aging population.

While there is no definite explanation for why most nudists are over the age of 35, there are a couple of strong cultural influences that appear to be at work.

One of the reasons that there are relatively few nudists who are in there 20’s or early 30’s is many of the individuals who are still active in the nudist community today were influenced by various political and cultural movements that occurred during the 20th century.

As new generations emerge into society that were not directly influenced by these movements mature into the younger adults of today, there is a far smaller portion of the population that have been exposed to the types of ideas that would encourage a person to consider nudism.

As tempting as this argument may be, it is also necessary to recognize that there has often been more older nudists that participated in nudist organizations than younger members. Granted, the contrast is more striking in recent years than it once was, but younger people have never dominated any of the major nudist organizations.

However, they can often be seen at their local public nudist beach. It appears that the cultural divide may just be increasing the impact of forces that have always kept most people away from considering naturism until they are well into their forties.

At the heart of the divide is nudism and naturism’s big image problem. People don’t think of nudism as a “cool” thing to be involved in. Its image has not been adapted to the 21st century, and it still looks like it’s made for older people. Nudism is also lacking online presence, and nudist websites are mostly archaic, clunky and outdated. Some nudist clubs and resorts are having difficulty getting any new members, let alone young people.

Many young men and women will skinny dip at least once in their life or visit a nude beach. But whether they will label themselves naturists and become an active force in the community, only time will tell.
