‘Dating Naked’ Episode 4 – Getting Naked and Male Naked Erections

Dating Naked – Day 1

In episode four of Vh1’s Dating Naked, we are introduced to Chuck and Camille. Chuck is a young entrepreneur from Miami, Florida and works in the ladies swim wear business. Camille is a young Las Vegas Nevada Bartender and cocktail server. As they first introduce themselves, Chuck seems eager to strip away everything in hopes of finding someone who will love him for who he is, whereas Camille seems a bit unsure.

As the two were sent to get naked for the very first time, we get to hear their thoughts about what they are about to do – Get Naked!

While getting naked, Chuck made an interesting observation and said that he was nervous. For him, being naked meant that people would be seeing “you for you.” I found this to be an interesting point. What Chuck said is quite telling of many of the issues that we face in society today, where people are constantly using clothing as a shell.

What I found to be the case in most situations is that the shell serves two main purposes. The first is the ability to hide your true self and put forward the person you would like others to think you are. The second is the fact that many people feel a false sense of being protected… As if a couple millimeters of fabric are enough to ward off any ill intentions by others.

Camille was also nervous, but for other reasons. She made an interesting comment that for her, seeing Chuck naked for the first time was the scariest aspect because she didn’t know what to expect. She also worried about keeping steady eye contact and not staring at his penis.

This fear of being perceived as a voyeur or creep is a big concern many people have when trying social nudity for the very first time. For the most part, once that initial shock subsides, most people tend to forget that they and those around them are actually naked.

Both Chuck and Camille were obviously nervous and felt awkward seeing each other naked. Camille seemed more uncomfortable and was giggling like a school girl. It seemed to be uncomfortable for her just being naked in public for the first time.

In an obvious attempt to abate Camille’s nervousness, Chuck lifted his hand in the air and invited Camille to take a look as he spun around in a full 360 degree spin. Camille’s burst into an awkward giggle and was able to muster enough courage to simply say, “very nice.”

Camille said that it was nerve-wracking being naked for the first time, but the fact that Chuck felt comfortable made her feel more at ease. This, too, is something we hear quite often. It seems like people are constantly look for outside signals that enable them to feel at ease.

On their date, Chuck and Camille spent the day on a boat. They had a rope which they used to swing and dive into the water. Camille had finally begun to feel comfortable in her own skin and at some point, while skinny dipping, she yelled out – “This is amazing” … an obvious sign that she began to relax and simply enjoy herself.

Dating Naked Day 2

As Chuck was getting naked for his second date, he made a comment that this time it was easier for him to get naked. This is also quite common as practice makes perfect!

His second date was with 42 year old Kristen who was looking for someone who can keep up with her sex drive.

Upon seeing Kristen for the first time, Chuck’s first “private” comment was how impressed he was by her breasts. Obviously he was sexually / physically attracted to her. During their date, they had a wine tasting. It was interesting to see how relaxed Chuck seemed. He was sitting with his legs open, relaxed and with an air of simplicity and innocence.

In stark contrast, Kristen was obviously feeling more guarded as she sat cross legged and and was somewhat distant.

Kristen is obviously quite sexual in nature. She made it a point to tell Chuck that she was is into BDSM. A fact that seemed to scare Chuck a little bit and made him hit the booze harder to try and control his fear.

As they were talking, Kristen kept looking down, almost uncontrollably, at Chuck’s crotch. She mentioned that she thought his penis is pretty and kept looking down. I found this interesting as the male penis is rarely described as “pretty,” but in a way I also found it quite cute. She was obviously smitten by Chuck and his pretty penis.

As Camille was getting naked for her date, she mentioned that she was excited. She was still obviously uncomfortable with being naked, but she seemed to be accepting her naked self a bit better the second time around.

On this date, she meets Rob, a young guy who has the body of someone who obviously spends much time in the gym. Camille liked the fact that was “built” and thought he was “super hot.”

As Rob was getting naked and preparing to meet his date, he said he thought it would be better to meet naked. He was of the opinion that clothes are just materialistic items, and he seemed genuinely interested in meeting someone and getting to know them for who they are as apposed to what they looked like or what clothes they chose to wear.. He was obviously quite comfortable being naked and said that for him, it was a fun and liberating experience.

Dating Naked is a show that is based on the premise that once clothes are removed, people become less judgmental and more accepting. But Camille quickly dispelled that premise as she quickly judged him for being previously engaged and the fact that he was younger. Rob is 22 which made Camille feel a little unsure of how viable a relationship with him would be.

Camille also made a comment that seemed somewhat judgmental. She said that his penis looks like “a baby’s arm holding an apple.” (What does that even mean?) She seemed just a tad bit unhappy with that fact. However as the date went on, she seemed to be able look past the surface, and it looked like she enjoyed their time together.

That night, they all met up at the bungalow. Chuck decided to take full advantage of his new found liberty and show up naked. This made Rob feel a bit competitive, like he had to “step it up” a bit. Interestingly enough, when Kristen arrived and saw that Chuck was naked (he was the only one) she giggled, blurting out – “look at you!” She seemed to have been taken by surprise by Chuck’s nakedness, but at the same time, she also seemed to be quite happy about it.

Thank night, Rob and Camille had “dating naked sex”, but Kristen decided to play a power game with Chuck instead. She claimed that guys like a challenge and refused to invite him to her room. In her opinion, playing the game would entice him more. I find this approach to be quite counterproductive and especially in this particular setting. Why would someone travel all this way, put themselves out there like that and yet still feel the need to construct barriers… But that was her choice and her approach.

Dating Naked Day 3

On day 3, Chuck feels comfortable getting naked. At this point, getting or being naked seems like second nature to him – YAY!!!

His date was with Michelle who works at a beauty salon. Michelle was obviously nervous and being naked in public was something that made her feel uncomfortable.

During their date, they were tasked with building a raft. The raft was needed for them to paddle out to a floating barge where they could have some food and drinks while in a secluded setting on the water. Building the raft made Michelle feel uncomfortable because there was a lot of bending over involved. She was very concerned and self-conscious about showing Chuck her vagina in such an obvious way. Chuck, on the other hand, did not seem to care about the nakedness and was pretty uninhibited. He was bending over and crouching while building his makeshift raft.

As Camille was getting naked for her third date, she still seemed a bit uncomfortable, but was handling it better. She meets Julian, a lithe young man with dreads and tattoos. Being tattooed herself, Camille found him physically appealing. But as the two met and talked for the first time, Julian was unable to contain his excitement and had an erection. Even though he is obviously erect, he acted like nothing is wrong and maintained a very suave-like demeanor. This was pretty odd as it is an obviously awkward first meeting and an acknowledgement of his excited state seemed warranted.

a Naked Julian has an issue. Photo: VH1: Naked Yoga Erections

On their date, Julian and Camille took part in some naked yoga. As Julian tries to adjust Camille’s yoga pose, he immediately gets yet another naked erection. This time he is clearly embarrassed as he tries to forcefully push down his erect penis.

Camille still tries to make the best of the situation. They continue doing their nude yoga, but Julian’s erect penis makes it difficult for her to relax and enjoy the interaction. Julian tries to brush off his yoga erection by saying that “naked women do turn me on.” This approach to the situation is also odd. I think that had he brought up the issue in a real way so they could talk about it, their naked date would have gone much smoother.

Things happen in life, but I am of the opinion that talking about issues makes for a far better connection, regardless of how embarrassing or sensitive the issue may be.

That night, all six people met up at the bungalow. Again, Chuck comes down naked and again, he is the only one. He seemed to have embraced being naked and figured that while he was in a clothing-optional situation, why not take full advantage of it? Quite a refreshing and healthy approach in my mind.

As he tries to keep his top “prospects” happy (Kristen and Michelle), he quickly discoverers that he is torn between two women. Kristen asks Chuck to walk her back to her room and while she seemed interested in inviting him in, she decides to continue playing the game and just gives him a kiss goodnight.

Who picked who is not as important in this episode. There are a few points I’d like to discuss instead.

The first point would be the fact that getting naked becomes easier for people over time. The more people participate in non-sexual social nudity, the more relaxed they become in their own skin. This theme is a recurring one throughout the show which is pretty much art imitating life.

The second point is that of naked men with boners. As Greg rehashes in his review of episode one, the issue that Julian had where he could not control his naked erection, is something that is quite rare. At YNA we have had many naked events and gatherings. Many of the events attract newbie nudists and curious people who are interested in experiencing being naked in a nonsexual social setting.

Not once have I seen an erect penis or naked men who simply could not control their erections. While getting naked erections is one the biggest fears and one of the most talked about issues in nudism and naturism, the truth is that it simply almost never happens (neither is seeing naked men with boners for that matter)!

So I urge all the viewers of this show to take this “incident” with a grain of salt. Whatever caused Julian to be overly excited is his own personal issue and without speaking with him or knowing his history, I can’t say why this was an issue for him, specifically. For an in-depth article that deals with this issue, see: Nudist Erections.

I’d also like to make a point about Naked Yoga in relation to erections. At YNA events we have had many nude yoga classes. Men do not generally get erections while participating in these naked yoga classes. While I have never seen a naked yoga erection myself, my guess is that if it does, it is a very rare occurrence and not something that most men will experience.

The fourth point is that of body acceptance. Camille made a comment that could be perceived as derogatory toward Rob’s penis. Obviously, people come all shapes and sizes and this holds true to men’s penises. Just because it may look a bit different, it should not affect one’s opinion of that person. America today is overrun by porn while educational content gets censored. By default, this leaves many people with the impression that what they see in porn is “normal.”

But the porn industry does not aim to portray a normal or average person’s body. Women undergo labiaplasty to make their vagina’s look prepubescent and have breast augmentations to make their breasts large and set in a fixed position – reminiscent of a young girl’s breasts that don’t sag. The same holds true to men’s penis size. While the average man’s erect penis somewhere around 5 inches, in porn it is closer to 8 or 9 (that is quite a difference!).

For those who were not aware, Vh1 had contacted us on several occasions. They were in search of people who would be willing to participate in Dating Naked. The reason we did not fully support their search was the fear that they would make a mockery of nudists or our way of life. So far, I must say that Vh1 and the producers of Dating Naked have been doing a great job. They have been focusing on the emotional aspects of being naked in a public setting rather than sensationalizing the nudity.

I, for one, am hoping they stay on point, but only time will tell!

Julian reveals what I suspected on his Twitter feed and that is that VH1 conveniently edited his episode for their own purposes. Read it for yourselves:

I think the condemnation of non-sexual erections within nudism should be stopped.  If a guy has an erection, he must not touch himself – as that is masturbation –

  • MichaelTrowbridge

    FelicityJones mystiqmajor pipermac5
For over 30 years as a nudist no one ever suspected that I regularly struggled with suppressing my totally non-sexual erections.  It started at age 14 at Venice beach.  I hated it then when my penis would pop up as soon as my short went down… but I’d hide it by sprinting right into the ocean… At age 56 now I get erections less but when I still do, I have decided to stop playing the “shame on my body” game.  Within a moment or two, it always subsides.  But if I were doing touching yoga like Julian was, it might not subside.

  • mystiqmajor  You make some good points but that’s TV today and someday “Reality” TV will Jump The Sharks as the cliché about soon to be dead TV shows goes; but overall it presents a safe fun image to a demographic the nudist world desperately needs right now. The 25 to 45 year olds out there wondering about say their next vacation or as one nude travel agency coined “Nakation”.

  • MichaelTrowbridge JordanBlum  I think the show does a great job of representing what a newer generation or demographic might feel and think about nudism and in this case an more open and honest approach to dating. This show may even have a similar affect to what Love Boat did for Americans and the Cruising Industry.  It show real time interactions in of course idyllic situations which of course are needed to answer the question would you date naked if no one else was staring away at you.  (Except for a camera person and millions on TV but you hardly sense that at the time) No it beats the daylights out of Bachelor and Bachelorette who almost never get there on any level!

  • Well firstly bravo for covering a show on VH1 about Naked Dating.  You should have been more supportive from the get go as you are after all called “Young Naturists” a new generation that hopefully won’t sound as stodgy as the Medicare Nudists running AANR and places like Lake Como in Florida! The show has it’s commercial appealing aspects but it actually shows real people interacting in somewhat real if not idyllic conditions but the very nature of the show requires a safe tropical setting and clearly many our chickening out and leaving which the producers are showing and I think that shows integrity in and out itself.  Many are admitting that the nudity part eliminated the posturing that clothes bring to the table in dating situations and lets be open and honest here it does obviously enhance the sensual which the show is about and as I tried to explain the Lake Como/AANR types nudist should not run from sensuality or sexuality I’m not talking Hedo III here just natural interaction between people.  I was at Cypress Cover nudist resort in the Kissimmee area of Florida and someone had the nerve to walk up to a married couple mind you who were just kissing the way many couples do at bathing suit pools and told them to essentially knock it off. I loved the man’s response: “We have a license to do this!”  Enough said!

  • MichaelTrowbridge

FelicityJones I just watched episode 8 where Mike and Moenay not only connected but had good long term prospects.  But when Mike’s second date invited Mike for sex superfast (I bet they had sex on the beach that afternoon too) Moenay didn’t have a chance.  I’m glad Mike and Stephanie embraced the serious bonds that the sex act mysteriously produces.  But I think committed relationships generally do better when the mind (not the genitals) rules whom we choose to feel committed to.  And this is, imo, what Kristen was trying to secure by slowing (as she stated at the end) and delaying sexual intercourse.

  • MichaelTrowbridge

FelicityJones  I sort of wish the show imposed a rule of no full sex for those 3 nights.  The reason is that sex is such a powerful bonder (or should be if sex is regarded as it is within me),
For example, Chuck almost chose Michelle.  I think that if he had slept with any of the 3 women that Chuck would have easily chosen the woman who had invited him in.  Instead, Chuck had to choose more fairly on who he liked the most.
Yet, I realize that, on a different episode, my theory had already been disproven when a guy rejected a women who he did sleep with…
In general this is a very good show and mostly good for nudism.

  • MichaelTrowbridge

FelicityJones Good points.  But I don’t think Kristen had to say with words that she is really into Chuck (although she probably had said many respectful words which were edited out of the show).  Her body language was clearly showing that she was totally into him the entire day except the last moment when she didn’t invite him in for sex.
In fact, there was a scene that first night where Chuck was in the pool but against the pool wall.  Kristen swam right to him and pashed him with a sensual kiss.  This initiation of a special kiss screams out “Chuck, I’m totally into you!”
I’m glad Chuck put 2 + 2 together and selected her in the end.

  • MichaelTrowbridge Uh, ok, you could say subconsciously she wanted to wait so she could get to know him more…I myself don’t have time to go back and watch the episode to see exactly what she said, but she made it pretty clear what her intentions were. But if you watched it and that’s how you interpret her actions, ok then.
To be clear, I’m not going to pass judgment on having or not having sex at any time while dating or in a relationship. It’s her choice regardless of the reason, and that must be respected. But in this case it almost backfired because Kristen didn’t tell Chuck why she wasn’t inviting him in. She didn’t say anything like, “I’m into you but don’t wanna rush it” or anything like that. And his response was confusion. He didn’t understand why she was saying no. He thought it might mean that she wasn’t really feeling him and didn’t believe they had a good connection. Her chasing game made him feel rejected. This sort of game can backfire.
The chasing game is not usually carried out because one person wants to be committed before sex. It’s carried out because the woman thinks the guy will enjoy it and value the relationship more when he finally “wins.” Some women also use it as a means of obtaining commitment with the logic that having sex too soon will make him lose interest.
Maybe later Jordan will give his take on it.

  • MichaelTrowbridge

JordanBlum Yeah, I agree, but we can’t really know how she felt unless we directly ask her how she felt.  Maybe she did need to know him more first.

Having a strategy (or game plan) might seem insincere but in it she does express herself.  First she is clear that she really likes sex and likes various kinds too.  And it seems ok to me to decide that she wants him to choose her for her being not just for her sex.

You may label it as a game but what she decided is a sincere form of self expression.  I think she may have also been expressing that committed sex is amazingly powerful, wonderful and binding.  To have sex on that first day had a greater risk of diminishing the powerful bonds of commitment that she has every right to desire and seek.

Seeing if he will chase her before committing has those merits.

  • MichaelTrowbridge Thank you thank you!
No, in this case she wasn’t withholding sex because she felt they needed to get to know each other more. She withheld it because she wanted him to chase her. She wanted to create a challenge, a game, because that’s what she thought he would like.

  • MichaelTrowbridge

Brilliant description of the episode Jordan!  And for the most part you opinions and observations are spot on too (imo).  However, I differ on your opinion that it was silly for Kristen to withhold sex from Chuck on that first date.  My opinion is that sex involves a special commitment which both parties should agree to prior to intercourse.  If she was not sure that Chuck was seriously committed to her, she is not silly to express a sexual barrier until after she is comfortable with his intentions.

  • mystiqmajor pipermac5 I mean yeah we have the nudity=sex message in our culture, but definitely libido / sex drive play a role in how often someone gets aroused.
Dating Naked has proved how often erections are not a problem with simple nudity, and nudists themselves know it’s not usually a problem. So like Julian, I’m sure the other male contestants would agree that naked women “turn them on.” But they can or have learned to control it.
I would say there are probably guys who get more easily aroused, who have a more difficult time learning to control it… Or there are many guys who need to experience a naturist setting a few times before they can stop the triggering of arousal.
Had Julian been given a 2nd or 3rd shot at Dating Naked, maybe he wouldn’t have had an issue anymore.
And I agree with mystiq, the show is actually not very sexually charged. A lot of the naked activities they engage in are innocent and not sexual, like mountain biking, water skiing, fishing, etc. The contestants feel physical attraction, but they’re just getting to know each other.

  • mystiqmajor

pipermac5 Sexually Charged would be a gross overstatement, in my opinion.  I do agree with you though; Ive known many people who couldn’t take their clothes off without a visible sign of arousal, or fear of arousal.

Although it is rare to see someone on the beach erect, unless someone came with me, I don’t know who is there for the first time vs a veteran nudist.  I have, on the other hand, had the experience of seeing people get naked back stage, as models, for fashion shows and shoots.  It is not uncommon for men to be aroused during a photoshoot, or when undressing for costume changes.  As far as costume changes, by the time the show happens they are too distracted by the demands of their role to be aroused.  Regarding photoshoots, Ive witnessed veteran performers get excited to the point of pre-cum dripping in obviously non-sexual nude shoots.

Typically, I simply wouldn’t make an “issue” out of it.  If they mention it, fine, but I wouldn’t mention it unless I wanted to explore the options it presented.  Otherwise, whats the point?  An erect penis is nothing to fear.  It isn’t going to just jump off someones body and wreak carnage and mayhem.  Thats not how it works….lol

  • mystiqmajor

Its still a dumb reality dating show…with or without clothes.  The fact that they have naked people with blurs following them around makes it even stranger to watch.  Couldn’t get “comfortable” with the first episode I watched.  It was too distracting…the blurs that is…and the vapid nature of competitive dating.

  • pipermac5

I can remember a time when I didn’t even need to see a good-looking woman naked to start getting an erection. If I saw a good-looking woman in a store who was perhaps dressed a bit “sexy” or “provocatively”, even though we were both fully-dressed and I had no intention of initiating sex, I still got a rise in my pants. This was true well into my forties, so I can imagine that a much younger man, who was raised in our modern, sexually-charged society would indeed have an erection problem when he saw a naked woman. American society HAS a strong nudity=sex cultural paradigm, and only nudists/naturists really understand that nudity DOES NOT have to equal sex.

Now, as a late 50-something naturist, I have been able to divorce nudity from sex, but it wasn’t that easy when I was younger and NOT a naturist. I had a strong libido, and it took very little to turn me on and get my motor running. Now, it takes being with the right woman in the right situation to get my motor running.

Even though I haven’t seen the show, from what I have read, and what would be typical for Hollywood, I would guess that pretty much the whole show is sexually-charged.
