Male Penis Issues In Today’s Society

How the Male Penis is Viewed in Society

While most of the body image blogs and articles have been focused on women, the issue of body image pertains to men as well. One of the greatest sources for male insecurity is the penis. Society also deems the public display of a male penis to be far more controversial than a woman’s vulva.

This can easily be seen in the media. I think I can say with quite some certainty that we see full frontal nudity of women in the movies to a far greater extent than we do men. But why is the penis perceived as being more taboo than a vulva?

The Psychology Behind the Penis

The male penis is a prominent symbol in human psychology. We can thank the great Sigmund Freud for much of the issues surrounding the penis in modern day psychology. As such, it should come as no surprise that there can be a lot of controversy surrounding this component of the human anatomy.

Let’s go over several key issues on how modern society views the penis and why.

What is the average aize of a man’s penis

These days, people tend to have the idea that “bigger is better” when it comes to penis size. However, to further complicate this misconception, most people typically apply this reasoning to length and not girth. This is somewhat ironic considering many women value girth over length when it comes to sexual pleasure.

It may shock many to learn that the average penis size is calculated to be somewhere between 5 to 6 inches (when fully erect) according to the NHS. Average girth is estimated to be 4.5 to 5.1. [Source: WebMD]

Does a Man’s Penis Size Affect His Ability to Sexually Gratify a Partner

While having a large penis may be a source of pride to some men, in actuality, the size or girth really don’t play a huge factor when it comes to sexually gratifying a partner. It may shock people to learn that most women do not enjoy sexual relations with a man who has a very large penis (in girth or length). Large penises can cause vaginal tears, discomfort and pain during sexual intercourse.

Since penis size plays a factor in sexual relations, it is important to note that a smaller than average flaccid penis, may actually become larger than an average size penis when erect. Just like the saying goes, never judge a book by it’s cover… some men are “growers not show-ers.”

Women will tend to prefer a more attentive lover than a well-endowed one. As long as the partners have an open line of communication, any short comings in size can be easily made up through action.

Small Penises and Body Shame

On a related note, feeling shame for having a small penis is something that has become prevalent in today’s society. In addition to reasons mentioned above the existence of the penis enhancement market has fueled this stigma.

By creating an environment of shame and insecurity, companies are racking up profits from men who are willing to pay large sums in order to have a larger penis. These kinds of marketing tactics have done a lot to shape the way men feel about penis size.

The penis enlargement / enhancement business is bigger than most people realize. One such example of a company who rakes in a ton of money by playing to these securities is C.P. Direct. This company has taken in $75 million despite not having any proof that their product “Longitude” actually works. But the shame and fears of being inadequate are so powerful that men keep buying the product. [Source: ABC News]

Another source of shame is the lack of educational information online. As is the case with girls and labiaplasty, young boys are also going online and comparing themselves to what they see. Since companies like Google and Facebook are constantly censoring simple nudity online, the result is an over-abundance of porn. Porn companies are lucrative and have the funds to constantly spin off new sites as the old ones get taken down. Since educational organizations don’t have the same financial abilities, the end result is a world wide web that is mostly dominated by porn (as far as naked people are concerned).

Porn is unapologetic. Its aim is not to educate – it’s to sensationalize. As such, the average porn actor will have a far bigger penis than the average person. When young boys see this and realize that they far less endowed, the seeds of shame have been planted. These feelings can stick with men throughout their lives.

Another problem is the fact that people do not see other people naked. This trend is increasing with every passing year. By not exposing kids to “real” human bodies, they are left with the impression that what they see online is in fact the norm.

How Penises with Foreskin Look vs. Circumcised Penises

Circumcision is an ancient practice that removes the skin that houses the head of the penis when it is flaccid. This was done for a variety of reasons, but the most prominent was the fact that the penis could become infected if the foreskin was not washed properly.

These days there are many conflicting opinions on circumcision and whether or not it is ethical, moral, or even necessary. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention circumcision in the US has dropped from 64.5% to 58% in recent years. [Source: WebMD]

The Male Penis vs Vaginas in Society

While both of the human sex organs are typically “hidden away” in modern society, penises tend to get more negative attention and reactions. There has been much speculation on why the penis is more taboo. Many point to differences in appearance between female and male genitalia. The female genitalia is often fully or partially tucked away behind the outer labia, or may otherwise be hidden by pubic hair.

When a woman is naked on TV, in magazines or in the media, that doesn’t typically mean that her clitoris or inner labia are on display. And when the bits do happen to be poking out, they may be conveniently edited out of the picture so as to satisfy the censors. On the other hand, male genitalia is all out there, even when there’s pubic hair.

When it comes to nudity and sex in the mainstream media, it’s all about what heterosexual men want to see. And it’s assumed they want to see naked women. Interestingly enough though, pornography researchers Ogas and Gaddam found that all men, gay or straight, like to look at penises nearly as much as they like looking at vaginas. Based on their conclusions, sex scenes should really show the penis as well, to capture male attention.

But then there’s homophobia. For the male gaze, heterosexuality is the default, and men don’t want to be caught looking at penises for fear of being mistaken as gay. In our society, heterosexuality is a major part of masculinity and manhood. A gay man is seen as less than a man. But we are making progress with LGBT acceptance and slowly moving away from restrictive gender norms.

Another reason for the penis taboo may be that women are seen as sexually passive, while men are seen as the aggressors with uncontrollable urges. Thus a nude female is non-threatening, while a nude male could be a sexual predator. It should be noted that exposing one’s penis in public is looked upon much more harshly these days than it was several decades ago. A man caught streaking or exposing his penis is far more likely to face criminal charges and be registered as a sex offender than a woman.

What is Normal, What is Not When It Comes To A Male Penis

The concept of normal is completely subjective. What is considered normal in a society is not always objectively rational. That being said, what is considered “normal” for penises in modern society is mostly shaped by cultural traditions and dogma.

It is “normal” for a man to have a circumcised penis (at least in the United States).

It is “normal” for a man to want to have a penis that is at least average in length if not longer.

It is “normal” for parents to want to keep their children from seeing a penis.

It would be wise to avoid thinking in terms of normal vs. not normal. We are all human, most have a penis or vagina, some may have both, others may be ambiguous. At the end of the day, it is the merits of a person’s values, ethics and behavior that are important.

By defining something as normal, we inevitably define a whole lot of things as abnormal – this could be problematic as people in different cultures and locations may perceive things differently. A large penis may be revered in certain cultures, and smaller-than-average penises may be more prevalent in some countries, but in the grander scheme of things, no one should care.

For all those who may feel like they are not big enough, are too big and so forth, let me just say that the best thing you could do is visit a nude beach, nudist club or come to a YNA event. There is no greater feeling than ridding yourself of the notion that you are some way not normal.

While we are not all the same, we are all equal and unique – and so are you!

So let’s all relax, kick back and pay some homage to all penises regardless of size, color or shape!

I think more woman discriminate against bald/balding men then they do penis size. I know that for a fact.

  • artandnature

Vaginas are also all unique and different and that is what makes a
woman a woman. Woman are  different from head to toe and in between.
“Seen one seen them all.” does not apply to women. But as i have heard
women say when it applies to men. “it’s not the size of the boat it’s
    the motion of the ocean.”

  • JohnDugan

Guys like to show it off, and why not? But we need to keep
it healthy so it looks its best. Regular use of a first class penis health
crème (health professionals recommend Man1 Man Oil)  addresses issues like dry/flaky skin,
    redness,  odor, etc.

    mikeuncut Exactly!

  • libertarian5150

I used to be shamed of my small flaccid size, until my girlfriend pointed out that a 6 1/2″ erect length, and an 9″ (circumference) girth are far more important. I now wave my tiny weenie with great pride! :-D

  • mikeuncut

Up until my late teens i thought my penis was small compared to other guys , then i learnt the difference between a shower and a grower…..Turns out my 4-5″ flaccid is normal and erect at 8.5″ and 8″ around is on the larger side . Most guys wish they had a bigger penis , but guys it really isnt all about size, just respect what you’ve got and enjoy……

The history of Circumcism is grossly inaccurate.  Here are a few references those who want to know more about cutting and not will find that the many of the issues about cutting that the medical institutions say are not true,…, are. It is all about $$$$, foreskins of new borns are big,…,no-HUGE business for cosmetics of all things. I have restored my 4skin. I am what is termed Mechanically intact since at birth, 75% od a Male’s sexual nerves are removed, never to be again. The glan only has about 25% of the nerves and those get lost in the ever thickening skin surface of cut males thru the years.

The original Jewish cutting, that of Abraham to his son was nothing more than a small flap of skin to leave a mark, ,a scare. It was not till the Maccabees at the end of the Hellenistic Period what the Male population in Israel had found how to restore it was the total mutilation of the 4skin don, out of meanness and anger, not the design that God had commanded of Abraham. All the cleanliness and sexual hang-ups were from the Victorian Age and after. NOW the CDC is going to promote and tell pediatricians to start trying to get parents to have their boys cut saying that the foreskin helps spread HIV based on faulty and manipulated statistics from 3 years of Adult African Males being cut. They do not tell you that in the 1980′ at the height of the Aides epidemic in the USA,…, 82+% of males were cut, not intact. They basically want to farm our new borns for the $$$$$ they make on them!.

Ancient rites maybe,…, but not of God’s want:   http://www.wistv.com/story/28192081/nyc-orthodox-jews-reach-deal-on-circumcision-suction-ritual

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4p9O3HSpaY   -This gal HAS done her homework! And I had read that only about 37% of new borns are cut today, this UTUBE is from 2012 so you can see the CDC really wants to get this going again! It is all about the $$$$$. THIS GAL HAS REALLY GOT IT RIGHT! This is all found to be right as late as 2014.  If you believe in a person right to decide-let them. TOO MANY MALES that were cut at birth are terribly bitter about it,…, they really are.

The medical community are not removing a troublesome piece of healthy flesh, they are removing a perfectly healthy piece of flesh for $$$$. “INTACTIVISM”,…., look into it if you really want to know what is really going on. It use to be made to be lies by the medical mainstream, NOW it is found that Intactivist are correct about many issues surrounding cutting.

I told the CDC that even if they pull off this fiendish plan, we are really good are re-growing the skin to make a new hood usually in under 2 years. They will not win. One has to wonder what they’d try next to get the restored one.

What parents need, and I mean NEED to remember is that they are speaking for their childs sex life, his self image, this is permanent-he’ll never get all those nerves back and if left uncovered as well, sex will diminish in pleasure as the year de-sensitize the glan. The most important is that your son may not follow your religion. HEY he may not. So to do something that YOU think is right against his body is so very wrong and he just may let you know it when he gets older, I did my dad as many cut males do.  Bless the Child

The “sexperts” have done men a huge disservice with all their “studies”, “surveys” and “polls” because they have relied on men self-reporting the size of their penis rather than on medically-measured penis data. As a result, we have been led to believe that the “averages”, the “norms” are larger than real-life. What is “normal” for any man is what he has, because what he is packing in his jeans is determined by what is in his genes.

I have never been a “stallion”, and age and other factors haven’t been kind to me. Yes, I have lost some erect length, but I have always been able to “get the job done”, including fathering four children by my first wife. How I “stack-up” to other men is immaterial, because I can’t realistically do anything about. My penis is simply another one of my “imperfect” parts. I certainly would never be featured on a Chippendale Show, because I am gaining on 60 far too quickly, and I wasn’t a Chippendale even when I was younger.

Besides getting over their fear of penises, nudists/naturists also need to get over their “erection-phobia”. Sometimes a man’s penis has a mind of its own, and a spontaneous erection is the result. Penises are DESIGNED to get erect, and it is a NORMAL part of being a man, so what is the big deal? If no-one makes a big deal of it, his erection will subside on its own. If he gets chided or embarrassed about it, he may never come back, and we will have lost another valuable member of our community. Can we really afford to run off members? Not when our ranks are already thinning due to societal and cultural pressures. We can’t say that we are “accepting” of all people if we make that an exception.

I used to think I was abnormal until I started visiting naturist resorts.  I found that there were men with smaller ones than mine, and that isn’t saying much!  I must be “average” and I no longer worry about it.  I am not circumcised.

  • billcvg458

Since a female penis does not exist why the redundancy in calling it a “male” penis?  Obviously, it will automatically be male.

Since you mention circumcision, parents should be aware that they are performing an irreversible amputation that will leave a permanent mark and scar on their child.

Is it normal for circumcised men to wish to have a foreskin? Shouldn’t that amount to an intentional injury inflicted by a doctor with the permission of the parents?

Since 1982 at least, men have been rejecting their circumcisions by experimenting and performing foreskin restoration, a lengthy procedure that won’t give the natural nerve endings back, but will cover the glans again with skin and reverse some of the effects of the circumcision.

  • livefyrebob

Any male who is concerned about the size of his penis might want to visit a clothing optional beach or resort.  When I did I realized that I was very normal.
