Male Penis Issues In Today’s Society

How the Male Penis is Viewed in Society

While most of the body image blogs and articles have been focused on women, the issue of body image pertains to men as well. One of the greatest sources for male insecurity is the penis. Society also deems the public display of a male penis to be far more controversial than a woman’s vulva.

This can easily be seen in the media. I think I can say with quite some certainty that we see full frontal nudity of women in the movies to a far greater extent than we do men. But why is the penis perceived as being more taboo than a vulva?

The Psychology Behind the Penis

The male penis is a prominent symbol in human psychology. We can thank the great Sigmund Freud for much of the issues surrounding the penis in modern day psychology. As such, it should come as no surprise that there can be a lot of controversy surrounding this component of the human anatomy.

Let’s go over several key issues on how modern society views the penis and why.

What is the average aize of a man’s penis

These days, people tend to have the idea that “bigger is better” when it comes to penis size. However, to further complicate this misconception, most people typically apply this reasoning to length and not girth. This is somewhat ironic considering many women value girth over length when it comes to sexual pleasure.

It may shock many to learn that the average penis size is calculated to be somewhere between 5 to 6 inches (when fully erect) according to the NHS. Average girth is estimated to be 4.5 to 5.1. [Source: WebMD]

Does a Man’s Penis Size Affect His Ability to Sexually Gratify a Partner

While having a large penis may be a source of pride to some men, in actuality, the size or girth really don’t play a huge factor when it comes to sexually gratifying a partner. It may shock people to learn that most women do not enjoy sexual relations with a man who has a very large penis (in girth or length). Large penises can cause vaginal tears, discomfort and pain during sexual intercourse.

Since penis size plays a factor in sexual relations, it is important to note that a smaller than average flaccid penis, may actually become larger than an average size penis when erect. Just like the saying goes, never judge a book by it’s cover… some men are “growers not show-ers.”

Women will tend to prefer a more attentive lover than a well-endowed one. As long as the partners have an open line of communication, any short comings in size can be easily made up through action.

Small Penises and Body Shame

On a related note, feeling shame for having a small penis is something that has become prevalent in today’s society. In addition to reasons mentioned above the existence of the penis enhancement market has fueled this stigma.

By creating an environment of shame and insecurity, companies are racking up profits from men who are willing to pay large sums in order to have a larger penis. These kinds of marketing tactics have done a lot to shape the way men feel about penis size.

The penis enlargement / enhancement business is bigger than most people realize. One such example of a company who rakes in a ton of money by playing to these securities is C.P. Direct. This company has taken in $75 million despite not having any proof that their product “Longitude” actually works. But the shame and fears of being inadequate are so powerful that men keep buying the product. [Source: ABC News]

Another source of shame is the lack of educational information online. As is the case with girls and labiaplasty, young boys are also going online and comparing themselves to what they see. Since companies like Google and Facebook are constantly censoring simple nudity online, the result is an over-abundance of porn. Porn companies are lucrative and have the funds to constantly spin off new sites as the old ones get taken down. Since educational organizations don’t have the same financial abilities, the end result is a world wide web that is mostly dominated by porn (as far as naked people are concerned).

Porn is unapologetic. Its aim is not to educate – it’s to sensationalize. As such, the average porn actor will have a far bigger penis than the average person. When young boys see this and realize that they far less endowed, the seeds of shame have been planted. These feelings can stick with men throughout their lives.

Another problem is the fact that people do not see other people naked. This trend is increasing with every passing year. By not exposing kids to “real” human bodies, they are left with the impression that what they see online is in fact the norm.

How Penises with Foreskin Look vs. Circumcised Penises

Circumcision is an ancient practice that removes the skin that houses the head of the penis when it is flaccid. This was done for a variety of reasons, but the most prominent was the fact that the penis could become infected if the foreskin was not washed properly.

These days there are many conflicting opinions on circumcision and whether or not it is ethical, moral, or even necessary. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention circumcision in the US has dropped from 64.5% to 58% in recent years. [Source: WebMD]

The Male Penis vs Vaginas in Society

While both of the human sex organs are typically “hidden away” in modern society, penises tend to get more negative attention and reactions. There has been much speculation on why the penis is more taboo. Many point to differences in appearance between female and male genitalia. The female genitalia is often fully or partially tucked away behind the outer labia, or may otherwise be hidden by pubic hair.

When a woman is naked on TV, in magazines or in the media, that doesn’t typically mean that her clitoris or inner labia are on display. And when the bits do happen to be poking out, they may be conveniently edited out of the picture so as to satisfy the censors. On the other hand, male genitalia is all out there, even when there’s pubic hair.

When it comes to nudity and sex in the mainstream media, it’s all about what heterosexual men want to see. And it’s assumed they want to see naked women. Interestingly enough though, pornography researchers Ogas and Gaddam found that all men, gay or straight, like to look at penises nearly as much as they like looking at vaginas. Based on their conclusions, sex scenes should really show the penis as well, to capture male attention.

But then there’s homophobia. For the male gaze, heterosexuality is the default, and men don’t want to be caught looking at penises for fear of being mistaken as gay. In our society, heterosexuality is a major part of masculinity and manhood. A gay man is seen as less than a man. But we are making progress with LGBT acceptance and slowly moving away from restrictive gender norms.

Another reason for the penis taboo may be that women are seen as sexually passive, while men are seen as the aggressors with uncontrollable urges. Thus a nude female is non-threatening, while a nude male could be a sexual predator. It should be noted that exposing one’s penis in public is looked upon much more harshly these days than it was several decades ago. A man caught streaking or exposing his penis is far more likely to face criminal charges and be registered as a sex offender than a woman.

What is Normal, What is Not When It Comes To A Male Penis

The concept of normal is completely subjective. What is considered normal in a society is not always objectively rational. That being said, what is considered “normal” for penises in modern society is mostly shaped by cultural traditions and dogma.

It is “normal” for a man to have a circumcised penis (at least in the United States).

It is “normal” for a man to want to have a penis that is at least average in length if not longer.

It is “normal” for parents to want to keep their children from seeing a penis.

It would be wise to avoid thinking in terms of normal vs. not normal. We are all human, most have a penis or vagina, some may have both, others may be ambiguous. At the end of the day, it is the merits of a person’s values, ethics and behavior that are important.

By defining something as normal, we inevitably define a whole lot of things as abnormal – this could be problematic as people in different cultures and locations may perceive things differently. A large penis may be revered in certain cultures, and smaller-than-average penises may be more prevalent in some countries, but in the grander scheme of things, no one should care.

For all those who may feel like they are not big enough, are too big and so forth, let me just say that the best thing you could do is visit a nude beach, nudist club or come to a YNA event. There is no greater feeling than ridding yourself of the notion that you are some way not normal.

While we are not all the same, we are all equal and unique – and so are you!

So let’s all relax, kick back and pay some homage to all penises regardless of size, color or shape!
