Basically Free: The Nudist Club and Its Community

The Nudist Club and Community by YNA

Nudism and naturism are terms used interchangeably that stand for the same basic concept: freedom in its most basic form. Like Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, the absence of clothing eliminates societal trappings in the way of anxiety and rigor. This gives way to nude freedom and comfort. Uncovered, everyone is equal, man and woman alike.

The Culture of Nudist Clubs

Nudist clubs and nudist resorts promote nakedness and equality without the crutch of sexuality. In the United States, nudism and sexuality, naked people or simply the naked body and sex, are assumed to be perpetually connected, but they are not and should not be thought as inseparable.

Like certain earthbound tribes that still exist today without the concept of covering oneself, the naturist wants to throw off the chains of what is conceived to be proper by contemporary society. There is only one difference between the enthusiastic naturist and a golfer on a public golf course: both indulge in what they love, but one does it naked.

At a nudist club, members consists of some nudist singles, but many couples and families which may include children. To them, being without clothes is wholly natural and without pretense.

The sense of community is all-encompassing. Some nudist resorts are clothing optional: there is no pressure to be fully or partially nude, not till one is ready to take the plunge. Most nudist clubs will mandate that people be naked in specific areas like the pool or sauna, while in other areas it is a personal choice. Those who go about all of their activities in the nude have made their choices and do not pressure newcomers to do the same.

Security and intimacy are intrinsic to the nudist club environment and again, are not congruous with sexuality. A nudist club is a not a swinger’s destination. Overt sexual behavior is against the rules, and respect and consideration for the feelings of others is paramount.

Nudist Clubs Are Not For Voyeurs or Exhibitionists

In nudism, voyeurism and exhibitionism are considered sexual deviations that do not dwell within the spirit of the culture. There is nothing particularly special about being naked in a social setting, except that everyone is naked and hence it is without novelty. It’s normal to stare at others’ bodies when first trying out nudism, but constant gawking will make others uncomfortable and may result in being asked to leave.

In nudist clubs nobody flaunts or attracts extra attention to themselves or their bodies. Voyeurs, who usually but not always outnumber exhibitionists, are asked to leave the camp or club if it becomes clear that they are there for the wrong reasons. Practices like voyeurism are based on shock and stimulus, and thus have no place among naturists.

It is very important to stress that the family model or unit exists within nudist social spheres, and those families are not there to have their kin and especially their kids, exploited in any sense of the word.

The Nudist Club Experience

Some nudist clubs and resorts are cooperatives (this means that all the members own the club together), but many are privately owned. For the average nudist both types of clubs are good options to visit and explore.

Some nudist clubs offer the amenities and experience typical to most hotels, such as restaurants, nude volleyball, naked pool parties, skinny dipping in a lake, gyms and tennis courts, naked yoga and many will offer table massages.

Some nudist clubs even host live entertainment or might have a night club. Again, everything enjoyed by the typical tourist is enjoyed by the nudist — only without clothing.

It is important to research a nudist club before visiting. Each club has its own unique personality and requirements. Finding the right fit is important for making the experience a positive and memorable one.
