Review Of TNS – The Naturist Society Gathering
The Naturist Society:
June 17th-19th we went to the annual Naturist Society (TNS) Eastern Gathering that took place at a large campground in northern PA. This was our first time attending this event along with a couple hundred people, and we had a pretty good time.
This week-long gathering consists of group discussions and seminars on various naturist / nudist topics and also fun leisure activities such as the dances at night, a tye-dying session, and swimming and kayaking at the huge lake. The food was okay and served 3 times/day in a big hall. We tented again, but there are also cabins. On our first night, there was a talent show of diverse acts, of which my favorite was the two-man duet with “Enrique Iglesias” and “Whitney Houston.” This was followed by Oneg Shabat (the Jewish welcoming ceremony of the Sabbath) with a group of people and a pajama-themed dance party. (I thought the Jewish Sabbath thing was really random, though it is a Jewish camp.)
On Saturday night it was a Halloween theme dance with some entertaining costumes. All in all there very few people in their 20s/30s, but this is not an event made for young people. (Young people don’t need a workshop on how to use their iPhone for example.)
Yet this is not to say there weren’t a lot of interesting people to meet and talk to, such as those who are involved in the Naturist Action Committee, and we were not disappointed with the NAC’s seminars and others about naturism. We attended discussions about children and naturism, “making waves” with NAC and on the future of naturism. Questions of the role of young people in nudism came up. ie, Why do young people seem to be missing in the movement? How can we reach out to them? These are questions we’ve also had to ask ourselves!
If you have been a naturist for a long time, do you think young people are missing? It was said that even those who are introduced to naturism when they’re young seem to take a break starting with the college years up to their 30s, and then some end up going back to it (at least we hope they do.) But are there plenty of young naturists out there? Does anyone know of any college besides Yale that has or had nonsexual naked parties? I’m wondering if naturism has any kind of presence at many colleges…
