How I’m Embracing the Stage Again With Naked Comedy

Naked Comedy, Acting and Promoting Naturism Through Entertainment

My goodness, this month has been a whirlwind! Since my birthday on September 25th, I feel like I’ve been going non-stop. On October 5th, I opened the Stand-Up Comics with an eight minute stand-up set all my own.

During my impromptu three-minute stand-up set in September with NudeComedyLA, I had won a month of acting classes at Two Roads Theater. There was an option for either various clothed acting classes or the Naked Acting Class. As I’ve been acting professionally since I was four, and surrounded by the entertainment industry since the womb, I opted to join the Naked Acting Class.

On October 5th, I found my stand-up groove. I walked out on stage in my full-length, hooded, black velvet cape (that I received as a Christmas present, twenty years ago when I was an angry 15-year-old Goth kid), and a pair of black patent leather combat boots with neon pink laces. The house was roaring as I approached the mic. Then I dropped my cape to the floor and I was off to the races. After my eight minute set, I left the stage exhilarated and ecstatic. I felt not only gratified, but like I had once again found my home or place in the world. My life purpose was restored once again. My smile may have even been so wide as I exited stage that I gave myself dimples.

So, here we are a few weeks later and I’m up for not one, but two shows the first few days of November, with two different companies. The first show is on November 2nd at 8pm, once again with Nude Comedy LA for their Nude Game Show night. The entire Nude Comedy Acting Class is hosting it at Two Roads Theater.

Then on November 17th (*postponed from November 3), I’ll be with 321OnFire for their Bareskin Variety Show. This time I’ll be doing another stand-up set and some sketch comedy. Following the show, there will be “Naked Power Yoga,” which I’m not sure I’ll be physically able to endure just yet. But hey, to anyone who can, they should totally do it.

To be honest, I never would have expected that my stand-up momentum would be so quick to take off. I’m certainly not complaining; I’m happy to be up on stage again.

I love film and television, but being physically present for the instant response of the audience is such a different experience than watching yourself with others and observing their responses while you remember the circumstances surrounding that performance. Live performance requires you to be present in the moment and savor that fleeting time that you will never truly be able to duplicate again, ever. It’s the performer’s version of every precious moment in life that you can never relive: your first day of school, your first kiss, your first time realizing who you are at your core, your first day being nude in public – all of it. And those are moments that live in our minds forever, but are rarely memorialized to watch over and over again as you can with TV and film or photographs.

And none of these amazing moments would have been possible if I hadn’t taken a chance and taken my clothes off that one fateful day when I was asked to be one of many naked people pseudo-shower dancing for a music video (that was never released) for Act Naturally.

No matter the obstacles that have come with Act Super Naturally, I don’t regret making that choice…ever. It has made me who I am. It has taught me to respect myself and cherish my body, figurative warts and all. But, most of all, it has taught me to cherish each moment and see beyond the shell of each person I meet or interact with, because we are all so uniquely special in our own way.

And between that and YNA, I have set the groundwork and am now truly finding my place in the crazy world and my path on this perpetual journey that is life.
