YNA Upstate Skinny Dipping and Juniper Woods Weekend
August 26, 2016 @ 5:00 pm - August 28, 2016 @ 5:00 pm
YNA Gathering at Juniper Woods & Skinny Dipping at Stony Kill Falls
In July, we had a great weekend at Juniper Woods and at our new skinny dipping place in Woodstock, NY. However some heavy rain storms led us to canceling our trip to the Mohonk Preserve and Stony Kill Falls that Sunday. Now we have set dates for another Juniper weekend and a rescheduled day trip to Stony Kill Falls!
From August 26 – 28th, we will camp out at Juniper Woods in Catskill, NY. This is a great nudist club that offers an outdoor pool, heated conversation pool, nature trails, petanque courts and more.
On Sunday the 28th, we will leave in the morning to visit Stony Kill Falls located in Minnewaska State Park (near New Paltz). Stony Kill Falls has a beautiful waterfall and swimming holes. The swimming area below the waterfall is typically not clothing-optional. But there is an unofficial clothing-optional section above the waterfall called the “nudist pool.” To get there, we take a hike up the mountain that requires a bit of climbing at certain points. (This is not a good hike for small children.) It takes 15 minutes or so to reach the waterfall and then another 20-30 minutes to get up to the pool.
We will have some fun activities going on for Saturday at Juniper Woods, and there is a (tentative) schedule below.
8-10am Breakfast at the snack bar
11am Nature walk
12pm Lunch at the snack bar
2pm Water volleyball
3pm Slip n Slide
6pm Potluck dinner
9pm Campfire, sing-a-long and s’mores
9:30am Depart from Juniper Woods
11am Reach parking area at Stony Kill Falls and hike out
12pm Arrive at the nudist pool
REGISTRATION: There are no YNA fees for this event, but we have an online registration for this event. Start by using the widget below or go to http://ynaskinnydip.eventbrite.com.
What to Bring: Towel, sunscreen, bug repellant, and sneakers or good shoes. (You must have good shoes to hike Stony Kill Falls!) For Juniper, you will need a valid ID and camping gear if you plan to camp.
Hiking / Fitness Level: It’s an easy hike to the waterfall at Stony Kill. However please note that it is an upward hike to the nudist pool, and it’s a bit challenging at times. You’ll need to do a little climbing at some points. This hike is not recommended if you’re not able to engage in moderate exercise.
Food: Juniper has a snackbar for simple, inexpensive breakfast and lunch. They offer eggs and breakfast sandwiches in the morning, and burgers / hot dogs and soft drinks for lunch.
Saturday evening at Juniper, we will have a potluck dinner so please bring something to share. We will have a fridge dedicated for us if you need to keep your potluck dish cold. We’ll also have use of the pavilion kitchen and stove if you need to heat something up. In the online registration, you can indicate what you’re bringing.
For our Sunday trip, bring lunch / food. Trash is carry in, carry out.
Cost: There are special rates for YNA members at Juniper Woods this weekend only. For non-members, the regular campground rates will apply.
Weekend visit — Friday (after 5pm) through Sunday: $45 for couples and $40 for singles. Includes camping.
Day visit (Friday, Saturday or Sunday) — $30 for couples and $25 for singles.
Day visit + 1 night camping — $35 for couples and $30 for singles.
There are no fees for Stony Kill Falls.
YNA Membership: A membership is not required to attend this event, but it will get you the discounted rates for this weekend at Juniper Woods. Beyond the discounts, please support YNA and help us continue doing these events by becoming a member for $22 / year and / or by donating more than the $22 yearly fee.
Accommodations: Overnight camping is included in the special weekend rate for YNA at Juniper. See above for all rates with camping.
In addition to camping, Juniper does have some overnight rentals. See their website juniperwoods.com for more information. You can make a reservation through their website or contact them: 518-945-1399 or email@example.com.
We will do our best to help arrange carpooling to Juniper Woods from NYC. Please email us if you can offer a ride or need a ride – ynaevents [at] gmail .com. (Once we have a Facebook event, you can also post there about carpooling.)
Juniper Woods is located at 1226 Schoharie Turnpike, Catskill, NY. It’s about a 2.5 hour drive from NYC. For public transportation, you can take an Amtrak train to the Hudson, NY station. (We recommend buying train tickets in advance since the price increases as the travel date approaches.) The train station is about a 15 minute drive from Juniper. Juniper can send someone to pick you up from there, but you must arrange this WITH THEM in advance. It is best to call at least the day before your arrival. (Do not just call them when you reach the station and expect to be picked up!)
Stony Kill Falls is in Wawarsing, NY on the northwestern edge of the Minnewaska State Park Preserve. It’s about a 1h 20 minute drive from Juniper Woods. For those who can’t come to Juniper, there is the option of meeting us directly at the falls on Sunday morning.
Directions to the falls / nudist pool: The trail to the falls is located off of Shaft 2A Road. We’ll follow this road until we reach the end where it’s closed off by a gate. Park on the side here. We’ll walk around the gate and follow the road, keeping to the left. We’ll pass a water treatment facility and an old quarry. Past the quarry we’ll reach a creek and follow the water until we reach the falls. (It’s about 15 minutes walking to this point.) To get to the nudist pool, we’ll follow the trail to the left of the falls and hike up for 20-30 minutes until we reach the top.
- GPS Address: There is no exact address for the falls, but you can use this intersection in your GPS: Rock Haven Road and Shaft 2A Road, Wawarsing, NY. If you use Google maps, just search for Stony Kill Falls.
- Note: There are no restroom facilities or trash bins here.
Frequently Asked Questions
First YNA event? Check out our full FAQ’s and etiquette page. Below are some FAQ’s related to this event.
Q: Is this event family-friendly? Can I bring my kids?
A: Yes, this event is kid-friendly except for the Sunday hike to the nudist pool. Juniper Woods is a totally family-friendly club. Stony Kill Falls is a bit of a challenging hike that would not be safe for kids, but it is an easy walk to reach the big waterfall.
Q: Do I have to be a YNA member to attend?
A: No. YNA members do get discounted rates for entry and camping at Juniper Woods. If you support the work we do and enjoy our events, we do ask that you become a member so we can continue!
Q: Is there an age limit?
A: Nope. We gear our events toward the 18-35 demographic, but you do not need to be under 35 to attend. If you are under 18, you must be accompanied by a parent / guardian to visit Juniper Woods. (You can contact them and see if they would allow verbal / written parental consent to go unaccompanied.)
Q: Do I need to bring my own tent and camping gear?
