Hike and Skinny Dipping Trip to the Mohonk Preserve
August 19, 2013 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm$12
Trip to Mohonk Preserve Clothing-Optional Section
If you didn’t get to visit during our YNA gathering at Juniper Woods, now’s your chance to visit Split Rock at Mohonk Mountain Preserve! YNA and Beth Nolan are organizing another trip and heading to New Paltz, NY on August 19th, Monday. This time our skinny dip/hike will be easy, laid back and relaxed.
This is a very special place. There is a large section of a stream dedicated to nudism, and it’s one of the last legal places in New York. The preserve is privately owned land, therefore they can choose to allow nude sunbathing.
There is not a lot of parking at this trail head, so let’s try to organize and fill our cars to capacity. A good place to meet and condense cars is the commuter parking lot located just off exit 18 to New Paltz. It’s on the left hand side right after the toll booth. It is free to park there. Please post on the Facebook event wall if you’d like to meet others at this lot and carpool from there. (It’s about a 15-20 minute drive to Mohonk from there, depending on traffic.)
At Mohonk, there are two parking lot options. One is Coxing Trail Head, and it fills up quickly. If that one is full, then there is the West Trapps Trail Head parking lot. This parking lot is a bit of a further hike. Once the parking lot is full the park is closed. That means getting there early, so we don’t get locked out. Beth will be leaving her house around 8:30am and going straight to Mohonk to get there by 10am.
Here are directions from Mohonk’s website —
Directions to Coxing Trailhead: Take the New Paltz exit 18 off of the NYS Thruway. Go 7 miles west (through New Paltz) on Route 299 to the end: make right on Route 44-55. The Preserve Visitor Center will be 1/2 mile on your right. Go 1.5 miles past the Visitor Center, turn right onto Clove Road, and then bear right at fork. After 1 mile, turn left into parking area.
Directions to West Trapps Trailhead: Take the New Paltz exit 18 off of the NYS Thruway. Go 7 miles west (through New Paltz) on Route 299 to the end: make right on Route 44-55. The Preserve Visitor Center will be 1/2 mile on your right. Go 1.3 miles past the Visitor Center, and turn right into parking area.
Bring your own lunch and beverages. Whatever you pack in, pack out. This hike is shorter than all the others and it is pretty flat. Sneakers are the recommended footwear. It’s a wet environment with logs and planks that cross along the trail and stream, until you get to the nude area where there is huge rock beach with plenty of shade and sun to lounge in.
Cost: The preserve charges $12 per person per day. They offer free access for people in the military if you show your active-duty military card. You will pay at the parking lot entrance and receive a bracelet to enter for the day.
