YNA Day Trip to the Mohonk Preserve Clothing Optional Section

June 10 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Mohonk Preserve - Split Rock Nude Section

YNA Meetup At The Mohonk Preserve in New Paltz, NY

Join YNA on a day trip to visit one of our favorite spots for nude sunbathing and skinny dipping in Upstate New York – the Mohonk Preserve! This will take place on Saturday June 10th, and it’s replacing our previously planned trip to Stony Kill since that area is closed.

The Mohonk Preserve is a beautiful privately owned park in New Paltz, NY that offers hiking, biking, climbing and other activities in nature. It has one clothing-optional section along a stream called Coxing Kill. It’s been around for many years and is legal and designated by the Preserve (though they choose not to mention or promote it on their website). It’s not difficult to find, and they mark the area with signs (see more below).

The water is very cold, but there is plenty of sun! It also doesn’t go deep enough to swim in this area, but there are different shallow pools to wade in and even little waterfalls to enjoy.

WHEN and WHERE: We will meet on Saturday, June 10th at 9am at the Park & Ride commuter parking lot located just off exit 18 to New Paltz on Rt 299 (see directions below!). We’ll condense cars and then head to the Preserve.

Once we reach the c/o area, we’ll hang out for a couple of hours and then hike back out in the afternoon. (People can leave earlier or join us later – but please note the info below about parking.)

HIKING LEVEL: This is an easy short hike, and it’s pretty flat. Sneakers are the recommended footwear. It’s a wet environment with logs and planks that cross along the trail and stream, until you get to the nude area where there is huge rock beach with plenty of shade and sun to lounge in.

COST: The park charges a day use fee of $15 per person. There is no additional YNA fee, however we ask all attendees to become a member of YNA! This supports our organization and helps us to keep organizing events like this one.

REGISTRATION: Please RSVP for this trip by using the form below! This allows us to keep count of the group and to contact you if we must make changes to our plans. Or you can RSVP by emailing us at ynaevents [at[ gmail [dot} com.

WHAT TO BRING: Towel, sunscreen, lunch and beverages, bug repellent. No trash cans, so what you carry in, you carry out. This area is mostly bedrock, so if that will be uncomfortable for you then you may also want to bring a soft mat or beach chair.

The Mohonk Preserve is about a 1 hour 45 minute drive from NYC.

We will meet at the Park & Ride commuter lot off Rt 299, exit 18 to New Paltz. It’s on the left-hand side just after the toll booth. From here it’s about a 15-20 minute drive to Mohonk. The plan is to carpool and condense cars here so that there’s enough parking space for everyone at Mohonk! Parking here is free.

There are two parking lot options at Mohonk — the West Trapps Trailhead and Coxing Trailhead. We will park at the West Trapps Trailhead lot, which is the larger of the two. As mentioned above, if you can’t do the longer hike then you could park at Coxing Trailhead and meet us at the c/o area. (See below for directions to both trailheads.)

Getting to the c/o section: From the parking lot, we will take a trail towards Coxing Kill. Eventually we’ll pass by a popular (clothes-required) swimming area known as “Split Rock.” Then we will follow the trail along the water until we reach the c/o section. You will see a sign on a tree like the one below marking the start of this section. This starting point won’t be marked on their maps, but there are free trail maps available at the MP Visitor’s Center (or for purchase online) that will show you where Coxing Kill / Split Rock is.

As stated above we will probably park at West Trapps, but directions to each parking lot are posted below (pulled from the MP website). Here is also a basic map showing where the trailheads are.

  • Directions to Coxing Trailhead: Take the New Paltz exit 18 off of the NYS Thruway. Go 7 miles west (through New Paltz) on Route 299 to the end: make right on Route 44-55. The Preserve Visitor Center will be 1/2 mile on your right. Go 1.5 miles past the Visitor Center, turn right onto Clove Road, and then bear right at fork. After 1 mile, turn left into parking area.
  • Directions to West Trapps Trailhead: Take the New Paltz exit 18 off of the NYS Thruway. Go 7 miles west (through New Paltz) on Route 299 to the end: make right on Route 44-55. The Preserve Visitor Center will be 1/2 mile on your right. Go 1.3 miles past the Visitor Center, and turn right into parking area.

CARPOOLING & TRANSPORTATION: There is currently no public transportation that will get you to the Preserve. We will do our best to arrange carpooling, which will also help with the limited parking! If you need a ride or can offer a ride, please let us know using the registration form above or email us at ynaevents [ at[ gmail {dot{ com.
