CO Dinner – Clothing Optional Dinners In New York City

Clothing Optional Dinners or “CO Dinners” by Felicity Jones

CO Dinners or Clothing Optional Dinners in NYC – I don’t know about you, readers, but I always find it interesting and entertaining to read stories from the perspective of someone who’s never been involved with nudism or a social nudity setting. After awhile it feels like there is actually a formula to these stories: the amusing expectations, nervousness, the climax moment where the writer takes the plunge into full nudity among others, followed by realizations and conclusions of, hopefully, “this is not so bad.”

I’m sure if you researched you would come across dozens of stories from people writing about their first time at a nudist resort, club or beach (or “colony” from the less knowledgeable sources). It makes for a good news story, and sometimes there are some insightful observations or elegant prose to make it interesting. I came across one such well-written story from 2008: “Hold the Dressing. My Night at an All Nude New York Dinner Party” by Arianne Cohen. Her writing is pretty funny, and her impressions seem honest.

I don’t think I’ve ever met the host named Richard, but this was probably a clothing optional dinner party thrown by CO Dinner (clothing optional), an old group that would regularly organize these kinds of gatherings in NYC.

I like this section in particular:

“People carry themselves differently when naked; it’s more authentic. You can read who people are at a glance. I imagined the heavily makeup’ed fashionistas of my Upper East Side neighborhood melting down under these conditions, their coiffed facades broken, their personalities unable to function in the harsh light of reality. There’s something very real about naked dinner.

Here she hits upon a reason many people pursue nude parties, socials or gatherings. You take away the clothing and facades to be confronted with a real person, the human being. Once naked, you are not your clothes and all the things those textiles say about you. You are just simply…you.

Cohen also says, “New York City is one of the worst places on Earth to be a nudist.” Ha! She backs up this strong statement by saying there is only one nude beach for eight million people. There is actually more than one nude beach on Long Island, and they are surprisingly not too crowded. Plus, at least women have the right to go top-free in public in NYC. Now if only NYPD didn’t get so handcuff-happy about public nudity, arresting people even in situations where the nudity is legal in public, such as art performances.

I’d also argue against this comment with the simple fact that Young Naturists America now exists, giving anyone the chance to try to social nudism in the city!
