White Thorn Lodge and Nude Volleyball Superbowl
Nude Volleyball - Last summer we spent most of our weekends and extra days off visiting nudist resorts and clubs to see what was out there as well as talk to club owners and members. I wrote reviews of most of the places we visited, but alas, one or two might have escaped. One was White Thorn Lodge located on the Ohio-Pennsylvania border.
We ended up at White Thorn on a weekday, so it was pretty quiet. But we were still impressed by the grounds, facilities and the hospitality. White Thorn has a large outdoor pool and gazebo hot tub, cozy clubhouse for events, snackbar, tennis courts, volleyball and other sports facilities. They also have two additional buildings, one for children only and another for adults only with a pool table and games. With over 200 acres to its name, it’s a pretty large club overall with spacious campground areas not far from bath houses and outdoor showers.
The people we met there were very friendly and of various ages from young kids to grandparents. Since we weren’t there on a busy sunny weekend, we didn’t witness the usual crowd, but it’s definitely a family-oriented resort / club. But given their full calendar of events, spacious grounds and varied facilities, there’s no lack of things to do for any visitor. As far as their rates are concerned, it’s also very affordable for young adults. As one member named Bud jovially said, “We got the best rates in town!” And he’s right. A 24-hour visit on a weekend is $27 for non-affiliated visitors or $21 for those with a social, associate or AANR membership. During the week it’s only $17 or $13.
We ordered pizza (delivered right to the gate), and on our way back in, offered a slice to an older couple sitting out on their lawn. “Do you know who I am?” said the lady sweetly. No, we replied. “I’m Superbowl Betty!” she exclaimed with pride. And so we learned what really sets this place apart from other nudist clubs: Nude Volleyball Superbowl. In 1971 Betty and Wayne started what must be the biggest, most competitive nude volleyball tournament in the U.S. It takes place every year after Labor Day and attracts over 1,500 people who go to compete or watch. Some arrive in teams while others make or join one when they get there. It became so well-known for its high-grade competition that ESPN sent a team to cover it in 2009. This year’s Superbowl will take place September 1-10, 2012 and also features live bands, dance parties, a corn roast and more. The club’s season begins Memorial Day weekend.

Has anyone ever been to Superbowl at White Thorn? The website nudistvolleyball.com lists games and tournaments at WTL and many other resorts. Is nude volleyball the most popular sport among nudists these days?

Lynn if I lived closer, I think I'd also make it my home club! Thanks all for your impressions of the Superbowl, it does sound incredible. It's on our bucket list now, and we might go this year!
What a great article, thank you so much, I was there when you were and it was great talking to the two of you. Thank you again
I attended White Thorn's volleyball tournaments quite often when I was younger. There would be a bunch of us that would travel down and we always had a great time there. The atmosphere is amazing, the people just as amazing! Like the above said, It is a must on the bucket list!! (and we even brought home a few trophies!!!!)
You guys will love the White Thorn volleyball tournament. In recent years East Strousburg State has sent 50-70 students or recent alumni there. Last year I would estimate last year about 15% of the attendees were between 18-25 or so. About 1,000 or so usually come though the numbers were down somewhat last year because of flooding on other parts of the east coast. The weather gods must be volleyball fans because there was a wedge of dry weather in the Pittsburgh White Thorn area. The admosphere is much different at night. ESU's reputation as a party school holds up well there. Gets pretty wild at night at the dances. Very much of a spring break or frat party atmosphere. Normally White Thorn is not like this and is more strict. Word of advice, if someone challenges you to a game called the "Spoon game", decline. You will be glad you did.
I attended the famous Nude Volleyball Superbowl in 2007. It was indeed a "bucket list" must attend. Everything you mention was also my perception. That white sand championship volleyball court is to die for. I came as a single and within moments of "trying out" found a group to join and played along with this massive weekend of high-level volleyball talent. If I didn't live in Arizona, where the weather accommodates year-around nude living, I'd consider White Thorn Lodge an excellent alternative "home."
