From Nudist to Nudie
Nudie vs. Nudist?
The Nudie Argument – If you, like me, have seen those vintage nudist pictures, black and white images and very grainy from the 1930’s and 40’s, you may be able to understand why the whole nudism “thing” doesn’t really hit the spot when it comes to attracting young people. Some naturists today are trying to re-brand their image into something more modern and even use the term nudie to try and distance themselves from those old German pictures of blonde haired men and women dancing with hoops. We all know that these people are now very old or dead, but the misunderstanding of what naturism or the new nudie movement is all about lives on. They say that if you explain something then people will become less afraid of it, and in this article I want to quickly dispel the myths about nudists or Nudies and explain some facts.
Myths About Nudies and Nudists
Nudie sexual adventure
This is one of the main misconceptions about the nudie movement. The amount of sexual activity that goes on between Nudies, is no more or less than that which goes on between people who are fully clothed. They are doing much the same as any “normal person” – only without clothes. To draw comparisons between sexuality and Nudies, is very superficial and down right incorrect!
Just by taking your clothes off in front of other people does not mean that you will become sexually aroused. Sometimes men who reveal their genitals for the first time realize that they are more likely to be aroused by a girl in a sexy bikini than nudist girls who are simply unclothed.
You have to have a toned, fit body to be a naturist
Sorry people, but naturists come in all shapes. Nudies can be fat, thin, old, young and / or everything in between. You don’t have to have a perfect “David-esque body” to be a Nudie. Nudism is about body acceptance, the idea that every body is beautiful and should be celebrated as such.
Nudism is for singles or couples, but is not a family experience.
Wrong! The nudist movement welcomes with open arms families and children of all ages. In fact, small children often joyfully embrace the lack of restrictive clothing. Please note that children are generally not allowed to enter a nudist environment without their parents or guardians.
Nudists never wear clothes
This is another misconception. Even though they feel more comfortable without clothing, they will cover up for warmth if the weather gets cold. Remember, nudists are people, they are not stupid!
Nudists are perverts
This could not be further from the truth! Anyone who visits a designated nudist destination would see that activities are of the “normal variety”, but without clothing.
To sum up, some people of the modern nudist movement prefer to call themselves nudies to change and rejuvenate the image of nudism. While this may help increase interest, the best way to rejuvenate the movement is by making it accessible, interesting and enjoyable!

Nudie Blues & Winter Nudists – Does Winter Make The Nudies Grow Fonder?
Nudie Winters – It was the morning of Saturday, February 11th. The weather forecast called for clear skies and a high of 65 degrees Fahrenheit. The last few days had been just as warm. The weekend was here. Plans were made to meet up with my brother and a buddy to go to the local clothing optional creek. Thick, gray clouds hung in the sky. But given the forecast, we were confident the clouds would let up. That glorious sun would come out and administer much needed Vitamin D.
This year’s winter has been particularly mild in Central California. Records had been set for the least amount of precipitation in the area. We had been feeling spoiled with winter taking its time to show up.
We had invited some friends to come and join us for the afternoon. They declined when they saw the gathering clouds. To us it didn’t matter. Faith and confidence would prove for a glorious day of laying out.
We were wrong. The weather predictions were wrong. The temperature was wrong. The only thing that wasn’t wrong was our attitude. We still went to the best hang-out spot, ate our lunches and made the most of it. We had more fun laughing at ourselves. We realized we were truly committed and completely crazy. On a dare, my brother bucked down and posed for a photo by the creek. Somehow it didn’t seem to matter that it was 48 degrees with a 10mph NW wind. As many know, naturism isn’t just freedom for the body, it’s freedom for the heart. To be naked in nature is just icing on the cake.
Since then, it has snowed. It’s too easy to count the days until spring. I realized, just like every winter, I had the case of the Nudie Blues. As I watched the snow flakes fall under the porch light, I swore I could have heard B.B. King singing in the background, “The Thrill Is Gone.” To perpetuate the “blues” further, I found myself gazing at nakation destinations via the internet. Then I realized, after staring dreamily into the waters of Club Orient, enough was enough. Just because it was snowing outside, didn’t mean there wasn’t anywhere to go or anything to do.
Okay, so I couldn’t afford a Caribbean vacation. But that didn’t mean I was out of options, not by a long shot. This is California, I thought. From my area, I could be anywhere in the state within 6 hours. So I got back online, this time with a practical purpose, and decided to look up any events or places of interest within the state. I couldn’t say there was a plethora of events in the Golden State, but I was surprised at all the events that were happening with different clubs and groups. I perused the virtual world of nudist resorts near Palm Springs. What they had going on looked amazing and fun. Still, I knew my budget was basically limited to the cost of gas and a cheap camp site. I just wanted to get naked and relax.
I had been to Deep Creek Hot Springs a few times before. The camping is cheap. It can be found in the San Bernardino National Forrest, just outside of Apple Valley. It’s exactly a 5½ hour drive from my house. Perfect. The best part of all, it could be snowing on me and it wouldn’t make a difference while soaking in 104 degree water. Okay, maybe the best part of all is that the area is clothing optional.
This was my solution to beating the Mid-Winter Nudie Blues. I have taken friends when they’re able to get time off work. I’ve also gone by myself and made friends while staying there. Every time I go, the experience never repeats itself. I come back home with a few less stress lines, desert wind-blown hair, and a little sun burned. I couldn’t ask for anything better. This experience leaves a lasting impression on my mind that suddenly makes spring seem not so far away.
Everybody’s solutions are different in kicking those Nudie Blues. The idea is not letting the weather or season affect your nude mood. A little online research goes a long way. Find out what’s going on and go join in. Find a resort either in or outside the country. If a group or club is going bowling in the nude, strike one for the team. Pin, I mean pun intended.
If you’re penniless, break out a lawn chair when the sun is out and plant it on a snowdrift. If you’re rich enough to buy the resort you are visiting, invite me. Winter is only ¼ of the year. Make the most of it. Kiss those Mid-Winter Nudie Blues goodbye.
Here’s a list of ideas you may find helpful. There may be limitations of budget, laws, regions, and of course weather. But when it comes to finding that perfect naturist outing, you have to be willing to do some winter-time foot work.
- Decide the minimum temperature in which you are willing to lay outside. For me, it’s 55 F, or 13 C.
- Hot Springs. A great resource is www.soak.net to find one near you. If the water’s warm, who cares what the weather is like!
- >Indoor activities. Of course, this is more an idea that caters to the die hard nudist. Some are more attracted to the indoor social perks of nudism, than the idea of browning buns. Many naturist groups go bowling, rollerskating, and have house parties. If you haven’t already, check out www.nakedvegancooking.com. Even if you don’t join this group, it can spark some ideas to start up a group like this one on your own.
- Resorts and Clubs. Though many are closed or inactive during the cold months, some offer great indoor attractions and leisure activities. Plus if it’s the off-season, some resorts offer discount rates.
Nudism is an attitude. It’s that innocent freedom that permits us to go against the flow and lay out our towels. It pushes our limits and insecurities back behind enemy lines. The Nudie Blues are not based upon conditions around us, but rather our state of mind. March looks like a great month for naked snowboarding.
