Nude Advertising - Do Nudity & Naked People Help Drive Product Sales?
Nude Advertising - Egyptians used papyrus to create wall posters with sales messages dating as far back as 4000 BC. Advertising has been a part of our collective lives for a long time. Along the way it was discovered that nudity, or at least the suggestion of nudity, can help achieve the main goal of advertising. That goal is to get attention.
The use of nudity for advertising purposes is controlled carefully to avoid giving an impression that the product being sold is somehow indecent or used for immoral or “naughty” reasons. Printed advertising usually pushes the envelope more than television advertising because of certain taboos and restrictions that are still applied to television, at least in the United States. Countries such as Italy, France and Japan tend to more liberal when it comes to how much of the male or female form can be shown.
While nudity in advertising is more pervasive with females, a web article titled “Nudity in Advertising and the Media” suggests even the words “nudity” or “naked” or words suggesting nudity can also be effective in simply getting people’s attention.
Sometimes the word “nudity” is used or “misused” to get attention, especially when it comes to internet advertising. For instance, a headline may proclaim an ad with nudity, when in reality only breasts are exposed or a backside is seen. The goal of nudity in advertising is to be provocative and get attention, good or bad. An example is a recent ad for the fragrance M7 featuring a black and white image of a nude male banned by many publications.
A study published by the International Journal of Advertising found nudity in advertising tends to be more effective in countries such as Brazil, Mexico and many European countries where such advertising is more acceptable. The Association for Consumer Research observes a correlation between men and women who are the subjects of nude / suggestive advertising and the way they react to the product.
At the end of the day, for good or bad, nudity sells.
